You’re looking at one of the most interesting small creatures found in Great Smoky Mountains National Park; it’s called a water penny beetle and it could fit atop your pinkie nail! These other-worldly creatures cruise like miniature tanks over rocks in the stream bed in search of algae to eat. Though they are aquatic animals as larvae, they eventually grow to become terrestrial beetles. This one was photographed near The Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont by @toddamacker. #water #penny #coleoptera #greatsmokymountains #appalachia #waterislife #findyourpark
